So over the last couple weeks Scott has been busy preparing the ground to plant some grass seed near the campsite. We are hoping to create a nice lawn area for soccer, cricket, football or whatever games groups might like to play instead of the dusty old ground. Sounds simple enough but it’s a bit of a process. The clay soil is not the best for growing lawn straight on. First the soil needs to be ripped. Following this, sandy soil is added on top to loosen up the clay soil and then this has to be tilled to mix it all up. To ensure healthy growth some good organic matter (dirt from the cattle yards) is added. This will then be tilled again.
The problems we are running into is we are a cattle station, not a crop farm. We don’t have the right equipment. Scott has tried ripping up the soil with the grader but the rippers are in front of the back wheels so the clay soil gets compacted as soon as it’s ripped. We have borrowed an old rotary tiller but it’s old motor needs lots of TLC to keep it going. But we will press on and figure something out. Once the soil is prepared it has to be watered to allow weeds to grow so they can be then killed (ripped out by tilling again or poisoned). Do this a few times to remove unwanted weeds so none come up when it is time to sow the grass seed. The other thing to make sure is ready is a watering system. Luckily Scott thought of this way back when he wanted to get some shade trees established and installed popups which have been waiting patiently for the time to be right.

It’s been really awesome hearing feedback and excitement from people for our dream. It really is very exciting and we can’t wait to see where this journey takes us. I have been doing some research and collating a list of equipment we will need for our activities and where we can source them from and how much we will have to fork out for them.
